Introduction: Craft + Nature = Magic!

If you’re looking for a summer nature activity that combines creativity, learning, and fresh air, this Outdoor Flower Wand Craft is perfect.

We spent a sunny afternoon making cardboard flower wands, then headed to our local park to collect real flowers to decorate them. It turned into a wonderful Science + art activity — with a little bit of fun too!

What is a Flower Wand?

A flower wand is a simple cardboard cut-out (with holes) mounted on a stick. Children can thread freshly picked flowers through the holes to create bright, colourful wands. It’s a fantastic way to:

  • Explore colours in nature

  • Identify parts of a flower

  • Develop fine motor skills

  • Encourage observation and patience

Our Flower Wand Adventure

We started by cutting cardboard shapes from our printable template, which has:

  • Different wand shapes to choose from

  • A list of common flower colours to spot

  • A quick reference to observe petals, seeds, leaves, and stems

We fixed each wand to a stick and set off for the park on a hot summer’s day.

💛 My 5 year old decided his wand would be all yellow flowers — a beautiful monochrome idea!

💦 My 2 year old accidentally dropped his wand in the pond before adding any flowers… so luckily I had made myself one he could use. (He was quite surprised when he dropped it!)

Learning Benefits

This outdoor activity is perfect for home education because it mixes art, science, and active play:

  • Nature knowledge – Spot and name flowers.

  • Early science – Observe the parts of a flower.

  • Colour recognition – Match flowers to the colour list.

  • Motor skills – Threading flowers strengthens little hands.

  • Creativity – Choose colours, patterns, and shapes.

  • Scissors (I cut this as the card was too thick for the kids)

  • Something pointy, a skewer (for making flower holes)

  • Maybe tape or glue (we managed to wedge the stick between the card)
