Discovering Minibeasts: A Fun Outdoor Home Education Activity

One of the best parts of home education is taking learning outdoors. This week, my boys (aged 2 and 5) and I went on a bug hunt adventure at the end of summer. Armed with our printable bug hunt worksheet, we set off to see how many different British minibeasts we could find.

It was such a simple activity, but it sparked loads of curiosity and fun conversations about insects and their fascinating body parts — from wings and antennae to shells and legs.

🐛 Free Printable Bug Hunt Worksheet

We made a two-page bug hunt printable to help guide our adventure. It includes 12 common British bugs for kids to find:

  • Caterpillar

  • Cocoon

  • Butterfly

  • Worm

  • Earwig

  • Ant

  • Spider

  • Ladybird

  • Woodlouse

  • Snail

  • Bee

  • Beetle

This sheet is perfect for homeschool lessons, EYFS nature activities, or just a fun day outdoors. Children can tick off each insect they spot, make notes, or even sketch their finds.

🌿 Our Bug Hunt Adventure

We set off to the local park on a warm summer’s day, worksheets in hand. My sons loved the excitement of looking under rocks, branches, and leaves to see what we might discover.

Together, we spotted:

  • A bee crawling on a flower

  • Several busy ants marching around

  • An earwig climbing a stone block

  • A shiny woodlouse hiding under leaves and mud

  • And a delicate white butterfly fluttering by

In the end, we found more than half the bugs on our sheet. My 5-year-old was especially fascinated by their different features — we talked about how some have wings, some have shells, and others have lots of legs. My 2-year-old mostly enjoyed the digging and lifting stones, but he loved joining in!

🦋 Learning Through Play

This activity wasn’t just about spotting insects — it was about encouraging curiosity and observation. Some learning themes we covered included:

  • Bug elements: wings, antennae, shells, legs

  • Habitats: where different bugs like to live (under logs, in soil, on flowers)

  • Colours and patterns: like the wings of a butterfly

  • Life cycles: noticing caterpillars and cocoons as part of the butterfly’s journey

These conversations flowed naturally as we explored, making it a gentle science lesson disguised as play.

  2. Head to your garden, park, or woodland.

  3. Look under stones, logs, and leaves (gently!).

  4. Tick off each bug you find.

  5. Chat about what makes each minibeast special.
