As part of our Apple Week homeschool theme, we combined two fun activities into one: an apple tasting session and then a family baking project. This activity gave us a chance to explore flavours, compare different apple varieties, and end the day with a delicious homemade apple cake.
🍏 Apple Tasting Activity
We began by taste-testing five different apples:
🍎 Braeburn
🍎 Pink Lady
🍏 Golden Delicious
🍏 Granny Smith
🍎 Royal Gala
Each family member ranked the apples from 1–5, choosing their favourites. Diego invented his own scoring system — handing out 1000 points for one apple!
The results were clear: although we all enjoyed trying the different varieties, Granny Smith apples came in last place in our rankings. But since it’s a popular cooking apple, that’s the one we decided to use for our baking session.

👩🍳 Apple Cake Recipe for Kids
This simple spiced apple cake is perfect for baking with children. It uses Granny Smith apples for a tart flavour that balances beautifully with warming spices.
Ingredients
(Makes 1 medium cake)
150g unsalted butter, softened
100g caster sugar
2 eggs
3 Granny Smith apples (approx. 275g once peeled & chopped)
150g plain flour
1 ½ tsp baking powder
1 tsp ground ginger
½ tsp ground nutmeg
¼ tsp ground clove
Sugar to sprinkle on top
Method – Step by Step
Preheat the oven to 170°C (160°C fan) or Gas Mark 3.
Prepare the apples: Peel, core, and chop into small pieces. Set aside.
Cream the butter and sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy, then add the eggs.
Mix in the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, ginger, nutmeg, clove). Stir well.
Fold in the apples until evenly distributed.
Spoon mixture into a greased and lined cake tin.
Sprinkle sugar on top for a sweet crunch.
Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden and a skewer comes out clean.
Allow to cool before slicing — then enjoy warm with your family!

🖍 Learning Benefits
This double activity blended fun with learning:
Sensory exploration – tasting different flavours and textures.
Maths skills – ranking and scoring apples.
Food science – understanding why some apples are better for cooking.
Practical life – measuring, mixing, and baking.
Family bonding – a shared experience from start to finish.
📥 Free Apple Tasting Chart Printable
To make the tasting activity more structured, we’ve created a free printable Apple Tasting Chart. Children can record apple names, rank them with stars, or even make up their own scoring system like Diego!
🍎 Final Thoughts
Our apple tasting and baking day was a highlight of Apple Week. It was simple to set up, got everyone involved, and ended with a warm, spiced apple cake to enjoy together.
